"The Unpress: New Gatekeepers of the New Hampshire Primary," is a free, open-to-the-public, town-meeting style forum this Thurs., Dec. 6 from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. at Southern New Hampshire University in which bloggers, reporters, citizens and campaign staffers will debate how blogs and the Internet are affecting political dialog in a presidential-primary year. PEJ's annual report on state of news industry prompts analysis by major media

The Project on Excellence in Journalism's fourth-annual "State of the News Media" report is out (March 12, 2007). It's findings and trend analysis are the basis for a set of thoughtful stories in major outlets. One of the best appeared in USAToday -- with lots of quotes expressing concern that without newspapers, news will dry up. A Reuters story expands on the theme that some may must be found to finance the news on the web other than advertising.


Poll finding: A majority of Americans see blogs as vital to future of journalism

(Via SPJ PressNotes) -- A majority of Americans (55 percent) in an online survey said bloggers are important to the future of American journalism and 74 percent said citizen journalism will play a vital role, a new WE Media/Zogby Interactive poll shows. Most respondents (53 percent) also said the rise of free Internet-based media pose the greatest opportunity to the future of professional journalism and three in four (76 percent) said the Internet has had a positive impact on the overall quality of journalism. The survey results were released by Pollster John Zogby as part of a conference of media industry insiders hosted by the University of Miami.


CONFERENCE: More than 100 attend "The New(s) England Revolution: From politics to courtroom to classroom"

 
More than 100 teachers, journalists, local and political bloggers, community videographers and active citizens explored how changing media is changing civic engagement at the April 7 inaugural public gathering of the New England News Forum, "The New(s) England Revolution: From Politics to Courtroom to Classroom." The one-day interactive seminar was at the Wannalancit Mills in Lowell, Mass.
